History of underwear

What started as the loincloth has now developed into the G-string: underwear. It has had a surprisingly storied history and has come in many varieties since mankind donned the first pair.

Learn how to protect yourself and your valentine(s)

We are all familiar with the age-old adage—"Don't forget to use protection!"—that we've been told, in one way or another, by a mother, father, aunt or friend (which explains why you are an accident). The fact of the matter is that the importance of using contraceptives has increased significantly over the years as sexually transmitted diseases have become more prevalent.

Despite losses, Cards still in hunt

Despite dropping two conference games to Bowdoin this past weekend, the women's hockey team is very much alive in the playoff race.

Men's hockey ousted from first place

After surging into first place in the NESCAC last week, the Cardinals had a disappointing weekend in Maine, losing to Colby 5-1 on Friday night and then to Bowdoin 3-2 the next afternoon. Wesleyan dropped from the top position into a second-place tie with Amherst and Colby, one point behind the new leader, Bowdoin. Middlebury, the three-time defending national champions, are fifth in the standings, just one point behind the second place teams.

Women's basketball earns fifth seed in NESCAC tourny

A 71-59 road loss to Williams on Saturday dropped the women's basketball team to fifth in the NESCAC standings, ending the team's hopes of a home playoff game. The Cards will head back to Williams next Saturday for a first round NESCAC tournament match up.

Sports Shorts: Men’s squash bounces back

After failing to notch a win in the NESCAC and Little Three Championships, the Cards' impressive 7-2 win over Vassar Sunday eased some tension for the men's squash team. The Cardinals lost three matches on Feb. 2 and 3 in the NESCACs before falling 9-0 to both Amherst and Williams — the eventual Little Three Champion — in the Little Three Championships last Saturday.

Sports Shorts: Cardinals slip against LIttle Three rivals, Vassar

The women's squash team struggled over the weekend, facing some of its toughest competition of the season. In the Little Threes on Saturday at Williams, the Cards dropped a 9-0 decision to Amherst in the opening match of the weekend. In the second match against Williams, the Cards dropped another 9-0 decision, failing to win a single game in either match.

Cardinal Athletes of the Weekend: Nick Pelletier ’08

Although the men's basketball season ended last weekend with losses to Middlebury and Williams, it would be hard to blame Nick Pelletier '08 for the Cardinals' misfortune.

Cardinal Athletes of the Weekend: Owen Kiely ’06

No one has been having a better season for the indoor track team than grad student Owen Kiely '06. An All-American in cross-country, Kiely came close to breaking two Wesleyan records at Boston University Valentine's Invitational on Friday. With a time of 8.22.14 in the 3k, Kiely came within .05 seconds of the school record held by Jeff Messer.

A worthy speaker

We congratulate the University for obtaining Jim Lehrer as this year's commencement speaker. Lehrer is a well-known news broadcaster who has moderated many presidential debates. It is gratifying to know that we will have a speaker we can not only admire for intellectual achievement but also someone we can brag about to our friends at other schools.

Avoid buying blood roses

Every year on Valentine's Day, millions of Americans head to their local florist shop or supermarket to buy flowers for a friend, spouse, or family member. If there's a romantic relationship involved, we're mainly concerned about getting our gift to the recipient—on time. Yet few of us ever ask where all these flowers come from or who helped grow and pick them.

Make business cards, improve awkward social patter at Wes

One of the many things I have learned from my "internship" experiences is the importance of business cards. No matter where you go—a conference, happy hour, meetings, lunch—people just throw around their business cards. I say all of this to propose that by THIS weekend everyone on campus starts carrying business cards.

P-Safe needs to reconsider guidelines for student privacy

Dear Physical Plant/Fire Safety people, I truly appreciate what you guys do. You keep the dorms clean, make sure doors close and that the lights stay on. It's a tough job and all students are grateful you do it. However, I am not sure what you aim to gain from your constant inquisition-like searches.

Ambiguous headlines

Middletown, CT- Earlier this week, at the exclusive New England liberal arts college Wesleyan University, diversity was promoted, activism encouraged, and awareness raised by a series of highly informative, concisely written headlines in the student newspaper.

Wes needs more weird chips, please

Dear Wesleyan Grocer Community, We don't think there is enough quality or variety of chips at WeShop. You force us to be on this meal plan and then you limit our selection of snack crisps to one measly aisle out of four.

Thanks, from WSA

Dear Wesleyan Students, On behalf of the Wesleyan Student Assembly, I would like to thank those of you who filled out the student questionnaire during the last election.

Enjoy the show

Oh come ON, Dave. Vieux Farka Toure AND his band fucking rocked Crowell. Chill out with the perfectionist attitude towards mixing boards, please.

My ideal date

Well, Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, so you know what that means for me. That’s right! A hot and sensual night filled with a hallmark card from my grandmother followed by a new episode of Top Design and repeats of The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo (hey, if I were blind I am sure I would think one of those ladies is hot).

Editors’ Love Note

Will you go out with us? (Circle one)

Local Middletown Valentine’s Day

The following is a list of the fun, romantic, and occasionally attended activities offered by the City of Middletown this Valentine’s Day.

Cupid: In Conversation

Recently, Andrew Bean took some time to talk to the demigod behind the holiday. We thought that he would talk to him about the more famous hook-ups he inspired: Dido and Aeneas, Romeo and Juliet, and David Arquette and Courtney Cox. However, what he found out was infinitely more interesting.

Open Letters to Shakira

The following are a few letters from a large collection that I wrote starting in freshman year of high school. I was a star-crossed lover who was in way over his head, but I suppose that's love. Watch as my journey from a naïve romantic, to paranoid lover, to a bitter, heartbroken man unfolds!

Valentine's Day Protestor Style

Recently, a bunch of Wesleyan students trekked down to Washington D.C in order to protest the ever-continuing war in Iraq. In doing so, they joined a lot of others. Unfortunately, nobody with war-ending powers responds to bleeding hearts (both in protest and in combat). This is why we must all be thankful for Mrs. Libby R. Tee's third grade class in New Haven.

Will You, the General Public, be my valentine?

As valentine's day approaches, and the hunt for a suitable one-day mate escalates, I find myself with a quandary. Who to pick? There are, obviously, hundreds of choices for a stud like me, but does one person fill the role well enough?
