After a somewhat disappointing start to the season, women’s lacrosse earned a much-needed home victory over Dominican College on Thursday, March 28. This match marked the first-ever meeting between these two non-conference schools. It also served as a great opportunity for some of the underclassmen and less-experienced members of the team to bank some playing time.
Wesleyan took the lead early, when Maddy Coulter ’14 scored a goal barely four minutes into the game. Cardinal dominance continued as Caty Daniels ’15, Leah Sherman ’15, Abby D’Angelo ’14, Lydia Kring ’13, and Emily Gretsky ’16 all scored, giving Wesleyan a 6-0 lead at half.
As the second half opened, the Dominican Chargers fought back, scoring three in a row. But a Wesleyan retaliation led by Martha Harding ’16, Gretsky, and Audrey Le ’15 gave the Cards a comfortable 10-3 lead. Although Dominican scored again, a series of goals by Hannah Plappert ’16, Isabelle King ’16, and Anna Michalowski ’15 sealed the deal for the Cardinals. Freshman goalie Nina Labovich also shined for the Cardinals during this match, making six spectacular saves. The final score was a 13-4 Wesleyan victory, with 13 different Cardinals contributing either a goal or an assist.
Two days later, on March 30, the squad hit the road to take on Babson College. Babson took the lead early on, scoring the first two shots of the game. But D’Angelo and Kayla Ellman ’13 quickly struck back, tying it up at 2-2. Babson then scored another five goals in succession, giving the Beavers a 7-3 advantage. A goal by Kring with 27 seconds to go brought the score to 7-4 at the half.
The second half opened with another three goals by Babson. A goal by Sherman interrupted the Beavers’ run but did not stop them from scoring another three shortly after. Wesleyan then went on its own run, as Ellman scored three impressive goals and Le and Coulter each scored one apiece. But this late rally wasn’t enough to gain the lead, as Babson ultimately came away victorious by a margin of 14-9.
Tuesday, April 2 saw the Cardinals take on Little Three rival Amherst at home. Amherst entered the match ranked 10th in the nation, and they proved their superiority as they scored the match’s first eight goals. The Cardinals answered as Berger, Plappert, Sherman, and Le all scored in the last 10 minutes of the half. The Lord Jeffs opened the second half with another six consecutive goals. Another two quick points by Berger were not enough to put the Cardinals back in the game. Amherst ultimately bested Wesleyan 15-6.
The Cardinals currently stand at 3-6 overall and 0-5 in the NESCAC. This Saturday, April 6, the squad will travel to Maine to take on the Colby Mules.
