Wesleyan’s men’s club rugby team, better known as Old Methodist Rugby, traveled to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., to participate in the Bard Sevens Tournament on Saturday.  Although Rugby is usually played with 15 players on each side, this tournament was seven-on-seven, and the men were up against Bard A and B teams, Montclair College, a men’s club team called the Kingston Mad Dogs, and West Side High School, a charter school based in Harlem.

After four matches to determine seeding, in which the Wesleyan men went 3-0-1 with a tie against host Bard, the team was given the number one overall seed.  They defeated West Side in the semifinals to advance to a rematch against Bard for the championship.

Thanks to outstanding play by Sam Broadaway ’11, Gideon Too ’14, and Trevor Rhodes ’12, the Wesleyan men were able to best the Bard squad by a 17-10 score for a 5-0-1 record on the day and the tournament championship.

Old Methodist Rugby will look to build on their undefeated first day of competition this Saturday, taking on Connecticut College in a home game.
