The men’s and women’s track teams inaugurated the home outdoor season on Saturday with the annual Elmer Swanson Invitational. Wesleyan recorded 35 top-five finishes, including 10 first-place efforts (five by each team), in the unscored meet.

The Cardinal women tallied five first-place finishes on the track, all by different runners: Kiran Sheffrin ’10 (200m, :27.82), Julia Frieze ’12 (400m, 1:01.37), Ceili Brennan ’13 (800m, 2:20.94), Jess Levin ’11 (1500m, 5:03.62), and Ravenna Neville ’10 (3k, 10:18.67). The Cardinals also got second-place efforts from Isabella Cucchi ’13 (100m, :13.53), Lia Monti ’13 (400m, 1:01.77), Julia Mark ’13 (3k, 10:26.38), Jessica Sherry ’13 (3k steeple chase, 12:07.74), Kathryn Kulowski ’11 (high jump, 4-11), and Kora Shin ’10 (javelin, 91-0). In other action on the track, Frieze took fourth in the 200m (:28.30), and Sarah Hensiek ’13 (2:23.52) and Helen DeKorne ’12 (2:29.74) took third and fifth, respectively, in the 800m. Wesleyan also had the third- (Sarah White ’11, 10:46.91) and fourth-place (Rose Keogh ’13, 11:00.44) finishers in the 3k run. Amanda Jacob ’10 took fourth in the 5k run (19:20.95), and Sheffrin placed third in the 100m hurdles (:16.92). Monti had the Cardinals’ other top-five finish in the field, taking third in the shot-put (32-10 1/2).

Mike Moody ’10 led the Wesleyan men with first-place hammer (159-10) and javelin (182-0) throws, the Cardinals’ only top-five finishes in the field events. On the track, Wesleyan got first-place times from Chris Coleman ’10 (800m, 1:56.87), Matt Katz ’11 (3k, 8:50.88), and Jack Pacelle ’13 (400m, :50.38), who also took fourth in the 200m (:23.57). Wesleyan also got strong efforts from Allen Mack ’13 in the 100m (third, :11.75) and runners Avinash Sridhar ’10 (third, 2:01.97) and Nelson Norsworthy ’10 (fifth, 2:04.17) in the 800m. The dynamic duo of Seth Hafferkamp ’12 (4:10.01) and Sam Roth ’13 (4:17.90) took second and fifth, respectively, and Wesleyan dominated the 3k run, with Skyler Cummins ’13 (second, 8:58.99), Jamie Lawrence ’12 (9:01.80), and Bryan Marsh ’13 (9:02.92) coming in at the 2-4 spots. Hurdlers Kyle Shin ’11 (400m, :59.12) and James Dottin ’13 (100m, :18.21) took second and fourth, respectively.

Next up for the Cardinals is the annual Little Three meet hosted by Williams on Saturday.
