The men’s and women’s track teams traveled to New London on Saturday to compete in the Coast Guard Invitational. The Cardinal women took third of the 11 teams at the meet with 98 points, just 0.2 points behind second-place Connecticut College, while the men placed seventh of 11 with 36 points.

The Wes women were led by a trio of first-place finishes on the track. Julia Mark ’13 took first in the 800m with a time of 2:23.11, with Jess Levin ’11 (fourth, 2:27.72), Helen DeKorne ’12 (fifth, 2:30.54), and Jess Sherry ’13 (sixth, 2:32.07) also scoring. Ravenna Neville ’10 took first in the 1500-meter run, clocking in 4:59.86; Rosie Keogh (second, 5:08.05) and Hannah Zimmerman ’13 (5:15.91) were right behind her. Also, Sarah White ’11 took first in the 5000m with a time of 18:34.68. Wesleyan also had point-getters in the 100m (Isabella Cucchi ’13, sixth, :13.39), 200m (Julia Frieze ’12, fifth, :27.76), and 400m (Ceili Brennan ’13, third, 1:01.16; Sarah Hensiek ’13, fifth, 1:02.09; Frieze, seventh, 1:02.65). Wesleyan’s relay teams added 14 points as the 4×100 quartet of Kiran Sheffrin ’10, Frieze, Lia Monti ’13, and Cucchi took fourth (:52.23), while the 4×400 team of Brennan, Hensiek, Levin, and Mark placed second (4:11.35). Kiran Sheffrin ’10 rounded out Wesleyan’s efforts on the track with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (:16.84). Wesleyan was led in the field events by Kathryn Kulowski ’11, who tied for second in the high jump (4-11), and Kora Shin ’10, who took eighth in the hammer throw (84-7 1/4).

Mike Moody ’10 accounted for 14 of the men’s 36 team points, placing second in the hammer throw (145-5 1/2) and fourth in the javelin (171-8 1/4), with Arya Alizadeh ’13 taking eighth in the latter event as well (134-1). Phabinly Gabriel ’13 had the Cardinals’ other top-eight finish in the field, taking eighth in the triple jump (38-11 1/4). On the track, Wesleyan’s top efforts came from Kyle Shin ’11 in the 400m hurdles (fourth, :58.59) and  the 4×100 (Andre Lima ’13, Immanuel Lokwei ’12, Jadeene Gabay ’10, and Jack Pacelle ’13; third, :45.62) and 4×400 (Justin Spring ’10, Nelson Norsworthy ’10, Avinash Sridhar ’10, and Chris Coleman ’10; fifth, 3:31.14) relay teams. Pacelle (400m, :51.09) and Spring (800m, 1:58.73) added a pair of sixth-place finishes.

The teams inaugurate the home season on Saturday with the Elmer Swanson Invitational.
