Track Teams Run in New England Open
The Cardinal track teams traveled to Boston over the weekend for the annual New England Open Meet, which was held Friday and Saturday at Boston University. In a field dominated by Division I schools, neither Wesleyan team scored at the event.
The top finish for the Wesleyan men came in the distance medley relay, as the group placed 13th overall and sixth among Division III squads. The group’s time of 10:20.42 is just 1.62 seconds shy of the school record in the event. Julia Mark ’13 and Ravenna Neville ’10 led the Wesleyan women, who finished 14th (10:22.27) and 15th (10:24.91) in the 3000-meter run. In addition, the 4×800 relay team of Jessica Levin ’11, Sarah Hensiek ’13, Ceili Brennan ’13, and Mark took 14th with a time of 9:39.35.
Next up is the final regular-season meet of the indoor season, the ECAC Division III Championships, which will be held at Smith College this Friday and Saturday.
Women’s Squash Goes 2-1 at Howe Cup
The women’s squash team earned a pair of victories at the Howe Cup at Yale over the weekend, trouncing William Smith College 9-0 and earning a 5-4 victory over Franklin & Marshall College to place third in the Walker Division. In doing so, the team finished with an overall record of 15-14, its first winning record since the 1998-99 campaign.
Wesleyan took a 9-0 victory over William Smith in its opening match of the tournament, with five Cardinals sweeping their matches and the other four winning by 3-1 scores. On Saturday, however, the team suffered an 8-1 setback to George Washington University. Elizabeth Larner ’10 was the only Cardinal to win her match, as she took a 3-1 victory at No. 9.
Needing a win to ensure its first winning campaign in 11 years, the Cardinals got a dominating performance from the top of the ladder in a Sunday victory over F&M. Tanesha Jackson ’13 (No. 3), Gwynne Hunter ’10 (No. 5), and Caroline Fox ’12 (No. 7) swept their matches, and Danielle Craig ’13 earned a 3-1 win at No. 4 as the teams battled to a 4-4 tie with only the No. 1 match left. Casey Simchik ’10 delivered another sweep to give the Cardinals the victory and secure the 19th ranking nationally.
Wesleyan went 13-11 in the 1998-99 campaign, the last of a string of seven straight winning seasons from 1992-99. The Cardinals also improved their overall record for the sixth straight year, as this season represented a two-match improvement from the 12-15 2008-09 season.
