On Sunday, Sept. 20, twelve Wesleyan students and one visiting student were issued tickets for trespassing after one person was injured during a cliff-jumping trip to Wassel Reservoir in Southington, Conn.

Led by an Outing Club member, the group climbed a 60-foot cliff in order to jump into the reservoir below. Most of the individuals leapt off the cliff and landed without problem; however, one student, who declined to comment on the incident, suffered neck injuries after hitting the water.

According to Mickey Capper ’13, who attended the outing, two members of the group were trained lifeguards and jumped into the water to pull out the injured student. After attempting to stabilize the student’s breathing, the group called emergency services.

Several ambulances and Southington Police Department cars arrived at the reservoir. Before paramedics transported the injured student to New Britain General Hospital, the police issued tickets to all thirteen students for trespassing. According to Myrecordjournal.com, swimming in the reservoir is illegal.

“They pulled us over to the end of the access road and wrote us all tickets—all of us who were helping [the injured student],” Capper said.

According to Capper, the tickets require violators to either pay a $92 fine, mail in a not-guilty plea, or appear in court by Oct. 2.

“This is still a continuing legal matter,” wrote Outing Club President Jared Schroder ’11 in an e-mail to The Argus. “I will probably have much more information to give The Argus as a representative of the Outing Club very soon, likely by the end of the week.”
