Jimmy Fallon is looking for an intern, and WestCo president and prospective film major Zach Valenti ’12 thinks he’s the right man for the job. The Argus sat down with Valenti to talk about the video he recently submitted as part of a contest to win an internship with the program. Valenti’s video can be viewed on latenightwithjimmyfallon.com and wesleying.org.
Argus: How did you hear about the contest?
Zach Valenti: I heard about the contest through the Wesleyan CRC (Career Resource Center). I actually got an email from them that Jimmy Fallon needed an intern. I checked out the site and the rest is history.
A: In your video you start off by suggesting to Fallon that he might be bored with close-up webcam videos, which your video was anything but. The collage style you used…is there an official name for it?
ZV: Not as far as I’m aware. It actually took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. Eventually my inspiration came from the HP commercials where the hands of some snowboard designer and some rapper move and slide cool little images across the screen, basically like a hyperactive power point presentation.
A: How long did the two-minute clip take to produce?
ZV: About seven days to figure out what I was actually going to do. About four days to make without very much food or sleep. What really takes the most time is animation. I used Adobe Flash to animate the pictures, and to give it a more organic feel I used cutouts of construction paper instead of drawing anything.
A: Where do you see yourself going from here, whether or not you win the contest?
ZV: I don’t realistically expect to win. But whether or not I do I made this video that I’m really happy with, that was tons of fun to make. Win or lose, it was a shot in the dark. What’s more important is it was cool for me to see what I learned last year – the value of coming up with a crazy idea and following through just to do it – stuck with me.
