The men’s and women’s crew teams both fell to powerhouse Williams on Saturday on Lake Onota in Pittsfield, Mass. The Cardinal women also raced Colgate and Vermont, narrowly falling to Colgate but soundly defeating UVM. The women now stand at 9-4, while the men are 6-2, with their other loss coming by 0.3 seconds. Although the regatta had decided the Little Three title in previous years, Amherst—which had not entered a men’s varsity eight boat since 2005 and a women’s varsity eight since 2002—did not attend. No titles were awarded as a result.
The men’s varsity eight of Ross Heinemann ’09, Gael Hagan ’09, Charlie Weiss ’09, Elliott Skopin ’11, Terrence Word ’11, Gilder Keeler ’11, Parker Cook ’10, Ben Roberts ’09 and coxswain Jenny Moyer ‘11 covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:31.2, roughly one boat length behind Williams (6:26.9). Williams has won 11 of the last 13 races between the crews—Wesleyan took home the Saratoga Oar in 1999 and 2007—and has not lost consecutive races to the Cardinals since 1986-87.
The race was the third of the morning; the men’s second varsity eight (6:53.4) had fallen to Williams’ “A” (6:41.6) and “B” (6:48.6) entrants in the first race of the day. The men’s third varsity eight and varsity four races were canceled due to rough waters.
The women’s varsity eight of Elaine Lauriat ’09, Claire Tradewell ’11, Catie Steidl ’11, Emilie Kimball ’11, Becca Schofield ’11, Heather McCarrick ’12, Sofia Warner ’09, Beth Ogata ’09 and coxswain Sami Pop ’11 (7:37.6) did not fare much better against top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Williams, falling to the Ephs’ “A” (7:17.2) and “B” (7:28.5) boats. Wesleyan also fell to Colgate (7:35.6) by two seconds but earned a solid victory over Vermont (7:45.9). Williams has won its last nine races against Wesleyan since the Cardinals took home the Elizabeth Neal Trophy in 1999. The race came between the men’s first and second varsity eight matches; the other women’s races were canceled due to the water conditions.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Connecticut College, Trinity and Clark to conclude the dual-race season.
