As the baseball team takes the field this spring, watch for Drew Dominguez ’09. A shortstop from Braintree, Mass., this slugger, who also excels on the football field, started in all 37 games last season and had a .361 batting average, tops on the team among players with at least 75 at-bats. He broke the seasonal record for hits last year with 56, going ahead of Dave Bushnell ’02, who collected 55 hits to set the mark in his senior season. Dominguez has also amassed the fourth-highest hit total after three seasons in Wesleyan baseball history. He currently sits in 22nd place on the all-time hit list with 114, just three behind head coach Mark Woodworth ’94 (himself a former shortstop) and former teammate Rob Coughlin ’07.

Dominguez, a righty, did most of his damage against right-handers, hitting at a .384 clip against them. He also had a .440 on-base percentage from the leadoff spot, reaching base a team-high 33 times from the top spot in the lineup. Dominguez scored 35 runs scored and drove in 25 more, including four home runs, in 2008.

Dominguez was a clutch player, with a .420 batting average with runners in scoring position, as well as a .359 average with two outs. He also led the team in stolen bases with 10 on 13 attempts. Dominguez also stood out in the field, robbing countless opponents with a series of leaps that led some to dub him “Spider-Man.” He also helped turn 12 double plays, the most on the team. Dominguez was named second-team all-NESCAC by the conference coaches at the end of the season. Look for him to be another all-star at the plate come March.
