In 2007-08, the women’s basketball team completed its eighth straight winning season with a 17-9 record, which included back-to-back double-digit wins over Williams, the second coming in the quarterfinals of last year’s NESCAC Championship. The Cardinals are looking to build on last season’s success this season, and much of their fortunes are resting on the shoulders of the ninth-leading scorer in Wesleyan women’s basketball history, Ali Fourney ’09.
Fourney continued her rise up the NESCAC ladder when she earned all-NESCAC first-team laurels in 2007-08, building on her second-team appearance in 2006-07 and Rookie of the Year award in 2005-06. Fourney led the NESCAC in scoring last season, as her per-game average of 16.4 was more than one point higher than the second-place finisher. Her defensive efforts were also on display as she led the conference in steals per game with 2.92. Fourney played 25 of the team’s 26 games last season—and started 24—missing only the penultimate regular-season contest against Middlebury. She returned for the final regular-season game against Williams and scored a game-high 23 points, including 10 during the Cardinals’ 13-0 run in the opening 7:45 of the second half.
Fourney ended 2007-08 with 1,066 career points, the highest total for any Wesleyan woman after three seasons. She currently sits 350 points away from Angie Palmer ’95, the highest scorer in Wesleyan women’s basketball history with 1,416 career points. Fourney has broken the 350-point barrier the past two seasons, scoring 410 last season and 360 the previous year to complement her freshman year tally of 298. With this year’s talented Cardinal squad more than capable of making a deep run into the postseason, look for Fourney to have plenty of opportunities to reach this milestone and cement her legacy among Wesleyan’s all-time greats.
