So hopefully you have checked out the wonderful Wesleyan Film Series over the past few nights. “Apocalypse Now: Redux” was totally epic and “The Band’s Visit” was totally awesome and witty. I hope all of you little froshies are as excited and as passionate about the Film Series as we all have been in the past years. It truly is one of the best activities Wesleyan has to offer and THE best college film series in the country, hands down. So come out EVERY night and see these amazing films we have in store for you. And it only gets better with each calendar as the year goes on. We have some amazing films in store for you in the future…so get excited!
“Jurassic Park”
1993. USA. Dir: Steven Spielberg. With Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum. 126 min. $5
So this dinosaur theme park featuring real dinosaurs goes ALL WRONG! (Surprise, surprise.) We realize that some of you were, like, three years old when this movie came out, so chances are you did not see this one in the theater. Let me just say this: there is nothing like digital dinosaurs, on a thirty-foot screen, with digital surround sound shaking your bones. Don’t miss the coolest film in which Jeff Goldblum has ever acted!
“Some Like It Hot”
1959. USA. Dir: Billy Wilder. With Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis. 119 min. Free
A pair of male musicians goes “undercover” in an all-girl band to escape the wrath of some mean mobsters. Everything is peachy…until they meet their fellow “band mate,” Marilyn Monroe. Needless to say, as they cave to their sexual temptations, this film turns into a sexy, cross-dressing romp. This is a perfect classic to show at Wesleyan, and a magnificently hilarious and sexy film.
“Gimme Shelter”
1970. USA. Dir: Albert Maysles, David Maysles, Charlotte Zwerin. With the
Rolling Stones. Documentary. 91 Min. $5
Behold, Musicals Week at the Wesleyan Film Series! This poignant and disturbing film chronicles the Stones’ 1969 tour that ended in a horrific scene at Altamont Speedway in California, a moment many have come to define as the death of the Sixties. And the Maysles brothers’ cameras were rolling throughout the madness. These filmmakers are masters of the documentary and this film is a near perfect example of the genre. Not to mention young and flamboyant Mick and Keith twirling to some of the best rock tunes ever written. Just a taste of what’s to come!
“Purple Rain”
1984. USA. Dir: Albert Magnoli. With Prince, Apollonia. 111 min. Free
Ladies and gentlemen…Prince and the Revolution! This is quite possibly THE coolest film of the 1980s. Prince. In his decadent ’80s regalia. Totally shredding it onstage with the Revolution. And then there is that part where he makes Apollonia swim nude in the cold waters of Lake Minnetonka while he rides away on his motorcycle. You are a serious loser if you miss this film.
