One University student has contracted Chicken Pox (Varicella) according to an all-campus e-mail sent by the Davison Health Center on Thursday. Medical Director Dr. Davis Smith stressed that there are very few people on campus who are at risk for catching it.
“You have to be non-immune and most people are immune to it,” Smith said. “Also, you have to have been exposed to this individual and not that many people were.”
Smith’s e-mail included a list of locations where the infected student had been, including Clark Hall, the Science Center, Fisk, PAC computer lab and at the Romance Languages and Literatures Department building. The student is now in isolation.
The Health Center is currently identifying people who are at risk and offering vaccinations, which would likely prevent the develop.m.ent of Varicella. As of now, no students have sought vaccination.
“We’re hopeful that by getting the word out early and isolating the student, we’ll limit this and there will be no further cases,” Smith said.
Any concerns should be directed to the Health Center at (860) 685-2470.
